Year One Newsletter – Summer Term 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school, I hope you all had a lovely Easter break!

Summer Term

English: Our writing this term, both fiction and non-fiction will be based around dinosaurs. We will be looking at information books, creating fact sheets and will be working towards writing our own fantasy story using dinosaurs that we have made up.

The children’s phonics sessions continue on Monday to Wednesday mornings based on the phase that they are currently in. On Thursday and Friday, phonics lessons will take place as a whole class group with the focus being on phase 5 and preparation for the Phonics screening.

Maths: We will continue to work on addition and subtraction and begin to focus more on some multiplication and division as well as continuing to work on units of measurement, shapes and fractions.

Science: Our topics for the term are Seasonal Changes (Spring/Summer) and Plants. The children will be investigating the weather and recording their results. They will also be learning how to describe the structure of a variety of common flowering plants. We will also be growing our own plants.

RE: Our big questions are ‘Are some stories more important than others?’ and ‘Do we need shared special places?’ We will be exploring some of the stories from the Old Testament and finding out what can be learnt from them and exploring the relevance of the synagogue to a Jewish person.

PE: Lessons will continue to take place on a Thursday and Friday. Both lessons will take place at the Memorial Field – one will focus on athletics and the other on rounders and kwik cricket. Please make sure that your child has suitable kit in school and that their kit still fits. Last term, there were quite a few children without a complete kit (socks being the biggest omission!)

Homework and Spellings… They will continue to be given out to children on Thursday and homework should be returned to school by the following Tuesday so that I can mark it and set the following week’s piece. The children hand in their homework themselves, placing it in the tray on the work top near the door, they will be reminded of this on Tuesday morning. Spelling tests will still be on a Thursday.

Date for the Diary:

Phonics talk – Thurs 27th April at 2.30pm.

If you have any questions or concerns during the term, please don’t hesitate to come and see me.
